Rising up out of the burning pools of fiery magma that fill the Caverns of Cynder, these gargantuan creatures are made from molten rock. Towering over the other inhabitants of their domain, the Magma Giant smashes everything in sight with its burning fists and hatefilled rage!

This new enemy comes as one plastic sprue, one XL base, a rule sheet and assembly guide, an enemy sheet, 12 Lava Space Markers, 6 Burning markers, 3 eight-sided dice, and a deck of 8 cards. One card is a Lava Spaces/Burning Markers rule summary, the others are all Epic Threats: one generic "1 Magma Giant", and three pairs of cards themed to the Caverns of Cynder, the Blasted Wastes, and the Belly of the Beast (one of the worlds in the Forbidden Fortress core box), respectively. The CoC pair is "1 Magma Giant" and "1 Magma Giant and 1 Threat card", the other pairs are "1 Wasteland Giant" (BW) and "1 Bile Giant" (BotB). These last two are enemy variants.

Probably the best coins I’ve ever seen for a game.

Way Better Than I Was Expecting

I was a bit on the fence when I saw semi-cooperative, but you have options for that. You can play the game in campaign mode or one-off mode, and from there you have the option of full competitive, semi-cooperative, or full co-operative.

I've only played Green Hill Zone so far, which hasn't been difficult, but I'd expect the later zones and the unlockables to be much tougher. Basically, you have 3 options for building a dice pool each turn, and then a few things at your disposal to mitigate bad rolls.

Without spoiling too much, this game can technically go up to 6 players, which I tried once. Played fine as it was, but made the robotniks a bit too easy, so I'll probably come up with a house rule to balance that one out.

Incredibly Worth It

This box has so much content in it for the price you pay. 25 scenarios, but actually a few more because there's sometimes an A and a B for scenarios, and each scenario can take 1-3 hours depending on your party. My only gripe is there's 6 heroes, but only up to 4 players for the scenario booklets. You can always try to house rule more in though.

Basically, it's a scenario-based skirmisher. Initiative bag decides who goes when, and you have some power over your foes because you know what action they are going to take and even have a little bit of say in how it carries out sometimes. But don't expect that to make this a walk in the park, because even on Veteran difficulty, we've had a few close calls throughout the campaign so far.

The Expansions Really Improve Bang

My first experience with the series was the Dice Game, followed by Samurai Sword. I'd say Samurai Sword is my favourite mechanically, but it only has one expansion, so it doesn't have the variety this Dynamite Box offers.

Bang is a decently old title, so the base game has its share of issues, but the expansions do a pretty good job of addressing those.

The heavy use of symbology (one of which isn't even on the reference cards), and the confusing rules behind the different coloured cards are issues that I plan to solve by printing my own reference cards. Highly recommend that at least one player is incredibly well-versed with the rules before playing with multiple expansions at once.
