2015 Golden Geek Best Solo Board Game Nominee

The mad Fire Elemental lord is out to burn down the dream forest. Attacking in waves using Fire Elementals, your only defense are trees and fountains and those animals brave enough to offer aid before scurrying away to safety. Using a unique drafting system and combining it with a tower defense game, will you be able to keep your forest green?

Sylvion is a tower-defense type game in which attacks come down four rows and in waves. You build a deck using a unique drafting process and play cards from your hand by paying with other cards in your hand. You can play cards to the rows like fountains and trees or play animals for instant effects or to manipulate the enemy decks of cards. When all the waves have finished, you must have your marker on a green space to indicate that you have saved the forest; if you stand on a red space, then your precious forest has burned down.

Great Games...Especially if you like MTG

You start out Sylvion by creating your deck according to a specific set of rules as well as some random chance. You then set up the board of cards (which does take up alot of real estate) and try to defeat the game by playing cards, discarding other cards to pay their cost, that do a variety of things. This feels kinda like a solo game of MTG. Very puzzly, very fun. The two player coop variant plays almost the same except that your partner pays for cards you wish to use and vice versa. This makes the game dynamics surprisingly different. I love it since the first part (the deck building) will dictate the strategy for the second part, much in the same way as MTG. There are many different ways to win in this game which requires a change in mindset and playstyle, again much like MTG. On top of that the game comes with a few mini expansions that enhance the game further.

The Oniverse saga continues

Tower defense game with card drafting. Can be brutally difficult to win until you discover the right strategies (though it's still no guarantee). Included expansions add variability. 2 player is more difficult than solo but make sure you check BGG for the errata as English translation of rulebook uses a more difficult variant for 2 player than what was in the original rules (and which the designer confirmed as correct).
