Scan and drill in search of the most valuable resources. Will you gain the most credits with the highest valued gems or by fulfilling bonuses?

In the quick tile-based game Planetoid, players take on the role of a space miner and attempt to collect more resources or bonuses than their competition. Players may choose to either Drill: taking a tile and revealing all adjacent tiles, Scan: looking at two tiles, returning them and powering up a secondary drill for later use or Move: Return all resources you have collected to the cargo bay. While returning resources to the cargo bay if your resources match those of one of the eight random bonuses you may collect it as well. Play continues until all tiles have been revealed or all bonuses have been acquired. The player with the most points wins.

The game also includes an advanced mode that allow you to make more strategic choices. Use energy to take multiple cheap actions or devote more energy to take bigger actions. The largest of these actions will break systems. You cannot use broken systems until you fix them on a later turn. In addition this mode adds secret bonuses for each player.

Great game to play with kids into mining and rocks

I've had this game for several years, and really appreciate how it scales in complexity. The basic game is really easy for young kids (mine was 6 at the time) to understand. It's basically a cool version of 'memory'. Last year we switched to the advanced rules, which has you flip over the player board and gives you much more to think about. Once he's mastered this mode, we have the option to add in an alien bot to mess with our plans.
It also has a great, tactile board and mat that looks great and adds to the discovery of mining this planetoid.
Highly recommended if you have a kid that comes home from school with pockets full of rocks.
