Caverna: The Forgotten Folk — Caverna: Vergessene Völker in German — originated as a fan project on BoardGameGeek, and Caverna publisher Lookout Games has decided to work with the designer to develop this material and release it as an official expansion.

Forgotten Folk consists of eight different species or race packs such as elves, dark elves, and trolls, and now each player in Caverna can be one of these species instead of only the dwarves in the base game. Each species has special advantages and disadvantages, and some species introduce new resources into the game. Each species has four unique rooms, and they replace rooms in the base game, which allows other players to gain the powers of these species.

An awesome addition to the base game

My wife and I have been playing Caverna for years. We've played enough times that we're quite used to picking out each others' strategies and working to counter them. The game is NOT stale by any means, but the Forgotten Folk expansion adds a great complementary layer of intrigue to the game. The 8 Folk play quite differently from one another, and the many new furnishings make for quite a different game each time around. I highly recommend getting the expansion for anyone who really loves Caverna.

I will say that the price is a little bit high as I was expecting some more refined components like the original games resources made of wood and plastic. In the expansion, the new resources are cardboard punchouts which work just fine but are not all too exciting.

Turns Caverna up to 11!

Having played Caverna several dozen times, this expansion is a breath of fresh air! It will provide several games of new challenges for experienced players as they try out the new races (very well balanced by the way), while allowing the noobies to still have the option to play as the original dwarves (who will inevitably be swallowed alive by the other races, but at least they have a chance to learn the game). If you love Caverna, this expansion is a must!
