Heroes of Telemark: Commando Raids in Norway, 1942-43. The Third Reich was racing to develop an atomic bomb, the critical heavy water being provided by the Norwegian county of Telemark. Britain’s Special Operations Executive (SOE) waged a long campaign of sabotage to delay the German program as long as possible.
This is a solitaire game in the Raider series. Cards generate missions targeting parts of the German heavy water complex. You recruit SOE agents, British commando teams, and Norwegian resistance forces, along with various types of weapons and equipment.
Event cards generate German forces and a wide range of actions, including the possibility of a Gestapo raid. You must overcome them all to accomplish your mission.

The Red Air Force challenged the Luftwaffe in a series of air battles over the Kuban Bridgehead in early 1943. The lessons learned by the Soviet airmen would help them gain air superiority on the Eastern Front later that year.

This is a two player game in the Air Wars series. Units represent one or more Soviet air regiments or German Gruppen. Aircraft include IL-2 Sturmoviks, Lend-Lease P-39s, Bf-109s, He-177s, and more. Bombing missions are needed to take out ground targets, while fighters fly escort or interception missions. The map covers the area from Rostov to Sevastopol.

Each player has a set of cards providing additional capabilities, improved logistics, and special orders from the high command. Victory goes to the player hitting the right targets and protecting friendly assets.

French and Indian War Battles is two player grand tactical wargame system for simulating battles in North America during the French & Indian War (1754-60). While these battles often involved small armies for the era, they decided the fate of the continent.

This game includes three scenarios: Lake George (Sep 1755), Fort Oswego (Aug 1756), and Quebec (Sep 1759).

Each battle has its own map, special rules and counters representing the military formations which participated in the original action. Each game turn represents from 10 minutes to one hour depending on the pace of operations. Each hex represents 50 to 150 yards, depending on the scenario. Combat units represent anything from a wing (two or more companies) to a battalion. Each combat strength point represents 40 to 150 men, depending on the quality of training and weaponry. Each artillery unit represents two to six guns. Leaders represent a single great commander plus staff.

Great European War is a Strategic level two-player wargame of an alternative World War II in Europe, based on the premise that Adolf Hitler did not order the invasion of the Soviet Union in June 1941. Instead, the Axis goes over to a naval-air offensive against the British with additional operations in North Africa and the Middle East, while waiting for America to enter the war and keeping a watchful eye on Stalin who may intervene.

The game assumes that the Western Allies decide on a Europe First Strategy, diverting forces and logistics from the Pacific. The Axis is under pressure to win the war before economic collapse sets in, the Allies to win before the Japanese seize too much of the Pacific. Given the shift in Axis logistics and planning against the British Empire and the US. only the westernmost Soviet Union is shown on the map, but there is emphasis on North Africa and the Middle East.

There are two players: Axis and Allied (to include the Western Allies and the Soviet Union). Both players can develop orders of battle by expending Mobilization Points. The game shows the war in Europe during the early and mid-war years before the full Allied buildup. Both sides will be fighting a war which is markedly different from that fought in the historical event. The game ends in 1943, the time when the Western Allies originally planned to return to Europe.

Thirty Years War Battles is a grand tactical two player system for simulating battles in Europe during the first half of the 17th century. Each game in the system is based on one of the major battles of the 30 Years War. Each battle has its own map, special rules and counters representing the military formations which participated in the original action. The rules model the overall effects of the weapons and tactics of the great era of pike and shot, and include combat, leadership and morale. Players command armies of infantry, cavalry and artillery, each with their own special capabilities, as well as the great leaders who took the field in this era. Each hex on the map represents 150-200 meters. Each game turn (GT) represents 45 minutes to one hour. Most cavalry and infantry units represent one or two regiments or battalions. Each combat strength point represents 75 to 150 men, depending on the quality of the army and assignment of light guns to the unit. Each artillery unit represents four to six heavy or medium guns.

Components: One 22" x 34" map & 176 counters.

This page covers the 2018 World War I Deluxe Edition boxed game, as well as the 2015 release in Strategy and Tactics #294. This game has a map that also includes North Africa and part of Asia, many more terrain types, more than twice as many counters (228 double sided counters), and a more detailed rules set than the original 1975 game that appeared in S&T #51. The earlier ones may be found here World War I: 1914-1918.

World War I originated in a combustible mix of dynastic ambition, nationalism, and misplaced confidence in a short war. Europe was an armed camp with mass armies formed by conscription and national reserves. Antagonism, fear, and suspicion drove nations into a lacework of alliances. Sarajevo provided the spark that set it off, and in a matter of days the continent was at war, with empires in the balance.

The map covers the entire war zone in Europe (36 miles per hex) and the Middle East (at a slightly larger scale). Terrain includes key cities, certain cultural and religious sites, primary railroads, and sea zones connecting it all. Counters represent field armies, with some specialized corps and a few markers. Six month turns keep the game playable, while multiple movement and attack phases allow for operational nuance.

Mobilization Points are used to build new units, absorb combat losses, and purchase campaign markers allowing additional activity in chosen sectors. They are always in short supply, increasingly so as economies shrink over the course of the war. Neutrals, wooed by diplomacy, may bring fresh strength to bear.

The main scenario covers the entire war from 1914-1918 in ten turns, while short scenarios handle the opening phase of the war (two turns) and the final great battles (four turns). Options include free setup in 1914 and an extension of the war into 1919. Victory comes from wearing down an opponent, either by capturing essential places or by exhausting mobilization points. In the game as in the war, battle is sometimes necessary for its own sak

Angola Raiders

During the Cold War a ruthless conflict was waged on the Angolan border between the South African Defense Force and communist insurgents. Border War is a solitaire game that puts you in the middle of that fighting as commander of a South African battlegroup based on the frontier. You conduct raids into Angolan territory, seize enemy base camps and, just as important, return to home base.

The game includes two decks of cards. The Mission Cards provide scenario objectives and the resources with which battlegroups are assembled. The missions are drawn from historic cross-border raids, such as Operations Protea and Modular. You recruit from a variety of unit types, including recon, commandos, mechanized infantry, paratroopers, G-5 long-range artillery, and air support.

Border War is part of the Commando mini-game series. Once a battlegroup is organized, you move it across the border. When a force enters certain points an Event Card is picked. Events can include anything from special intelligence information to the appearance of major enemy forces. There’s a range of foes, from SWAPO insurgents and Angolan government regulars to powerful Cuban armored formations. Combat is resolved via a quasi-tactical procedure in which both tactical superiority and firepower play their parts. There are special rules for helicopter reaction forces, PSYOP, and leaders.

Paratrooper is a two player game system simulating airborne operations from World War II to Korea. Each game in the system will include one or more scenarios, representing different airborne operations. This first game includes two scenarios. The first is Palembang: The Air Assault on Sumatra, February 1942, the Japanese airborne operation that attempted to gain control of the Dutch East India oilfields. In the second, Primosole Bridge: The Clash of Airborne, Sicily July 1943, the British 1st Airborne Brigade clash with the German 1st Fallschirmjaeger Division. Units represent airborne (parachute, glider) and ground forces at the company and platoon level. Each hex on the map represents approximately one mile. Combat resolution is quasi-tactical. Central to play of the game is the command system, with players expending command points to conduct special actions.

Long Range Desert Group (LRDG) is a solitaire game covering small-scale British operations against the Axis forces in North Africa. The player has to carry out one of four missions, or string all four together in a campaign game.

LRDG uses the Commando series rules. Each mission card grants the player a specified number of operations points to reach certain objectives. Operations points are expended to recruit the special ops team, then to move and attack on the map. A deck of event cards controls the opposition forces (OPFOR). Combat is resolved using a quasi-tactical system with opposing units taking turns firing at one another. Victory can increase the number of operations points available, but heavy losses can reduce them. The game ends when the player runs out of points.

Suez ‘56 places you in command of British, French, and Israeli forces in Operation Musketeer, the invasion of Egypt. The historical objective was to regain control of the Suez Canal and potentially remove Egypt’s President Nasser. Your mission is to achieve those objectives while avoiding the political debacle that marred the actual event.

The game uses the Cold War Blitz series rules, a solitaire game system. You command the allied units, and have a deck of cards to enhance your unit capabilities. A second deck of cards, drawn randomly one at a time, controls Egyptian (OPFOR) activities. Combat is resolved with a quasi-tactical system with opposing units firing at one another. The game ends after the last turn, but you control when that is through the judicious play of your cards (the OPFOR cards can affect it too).

Khe Sanh ‘68 places you in command of United States and South Vietnamese (ARVN) forces in the campaign to relieve the USMC firebase at Khe Sanh during the Vietnam War. The historical campaign was something of a race against time as the US high command feared that the North Vietnamese were going to attempt to overrun the base. All resources put into the Khe Sanh fight, however, were subtracted from those available to deal with the Tet Offensive elsewhere. Your mission is to extract maximum communist losses while minimizing the allied effort.

The game uses the Cold War Blitz series rules, a solitaire game system. You command the US and ARVN units, and have a deck of cards to enhance your unit capabilities. A second deck of cards, drawn randomly one at a time, controls communist (OPFOR) activities. Combat is resolved with a quasi-tactical system with opposing units firing at one another.

Publishers blurb: "STORM OF STEEL is a complete simulation of World War One. The three maps cover Europe from the Pyrenees to the Urals, plus the Middle East. Fighting rages from St. Petersburg to Verdun to Baghdad and beyond. The maps can be combined for one grand game of the Great War, or they may be used separately for theater-level campaigns of the eastern front, the western front and the Middle East. The game rules use a modular approach, which allows players to employ the level of complexity they desire. Turns are quarterly, but players can use special campaign cards to provide additional move-fight impulses, recreating the intensive offensives of the war. There are scenarios for each year and each front of the war, as well as a grand game for the entire war. There is also a "what if" scenario for the war continuing into 1919.

Units represent land, naval and air forces. Ground forces are portrayed at corps level. Each corps is rated for the number of divisions it includes; so players can concentrate for the offensive or disperse for the defense. Corps include infantry, shock troops, mountain infantry and cavalry. There are also specialized armored car and tank brigades, as well as tank corps for 1919, plus the planned-for American airborne division. Each country has its own unique order of battle so, for example, the Austro-Hungarians have mountain corps, and there are also additional units representing Bolshevik and independent nationalist forces.

Naval units are at the squadron level for capital ships, and flotillas for cruisers and destroyers. There is also a complete submarine warfare module for attacks on merchant shipping. Air warfare is represented by strategic and tactical wings. A unique feature of the game is players can improve their aerial warfare capabilities by increasing their air doctrine level. As air doctrine improves, players can employ interception, aerial supply and aircraft carrier operations. On the subversive side, players can utilize agents to conduct propaganda and sabotage operations to undermine their foes from within.

Land combat uses three different combat results tables to model different tactics. Tank and shock troop units can use the much more effective Infiltration CRT. Naval combat requires opposing fleets to first acquire each other, then engage in gunnery. Lighter fleet units become invaluable for recon and screening, while battleships and battlecruiser squadrons close in for the kill. In the air, players can execute a variety of missions, including air superiority and bombardment.

An industrial production module gives players the capability to produce different types of forces. Production is tied to morale, and winning great battles will enhance your side's output while a disastrous defeat may lead to strikes on the home front. Storm of Steel uses a card system to generate major operations. Campaign cards give players additional move-fight impulses, combat bonuses and extra reinforcements. Players have to carefully choose which campaigns they will implement because some cards, such as the Schlieffen Plan, will provide for more maneuver, while others, such as Verdun, will enhance combat. There are also cards that will grant tactical innovations such as chemical warfare and armored doctrine, as well as bringing into play leaders such as Hindenburg, Brusilov and Lawrence of Arabia."

Agricola is a wargame of the campaign fought by Gnaeus Julius Agricola, the Roman governor of Britain (AD 77-85) to conquer northern Britannia (modern Britain). There are two players, the Roman and the Caledonian (the latter actually representing various northern British tribes). Each player is provided with cardboard pieces called “units” that represent military formations or tribal warbands. Players move their units, conduct battles and objectives.

Each player has a set of Stratagem markers. Players use these markers to recruit new units, move their forces on the map, and take special actions. Whenever opposing forces are in the same hex, a battle will ensue. Various Stratagem markers can also be used to enhance operations.

(from Decision Games website:)

The 19th century saw the great imperial powers of Europe clash in titanic battles to establish control over the continent. Empires at War simulates four of these battles.

The Basic Game allows beginners to learn quickly, while providing experienced players an exciting evening of action. The Advanced Game fully simulates grand tactics of this period. Rules include provisions for light infantry (jaegers and chasseurs), command control, morale, fog of war, and mitrailleuse (early machine guns).

- Inkerman, 5 November 1854
At the height of the Crimean War, the Russians made a determined attempt to break out of Sevastopol. After a desperate day of fighting in rough terrain and fog, the Russians nearly broke the outnumbered Allies, but fell back with severe losses.

- Solferino, 24 June 1859
A decisive clash between the French/Sardinian and the Austrians came at the town of Solferino. The narrow French/Sardinian victory over Austria was due to the intrepid leadership of individual French corps commanders.

- Koniggratz, 3 July 1866
The decisive battle of the "Six Weeks War" came after a month of preliminary maneuvering. After a day of bloody see-saw fighting, the Prussian Second Army suddenly appeared on the northern flank, rolling up the Austrian line.
- Gravelotte-St. Privat, 18 August 1870
The decisive action occurred near the great fortress of Metz. The situation might have turned in favor of the French, but hesitation allowed Von Moltke to regroup and prepare a flanking maneuver that assured a German victory.

Quad game depicting 4 battles fought during the 19th century: Inkerman (1854), Solferino (1859), Königgratz (1866) and Gravelotte (1870).

Lots of chrome rules, including command control, different weapon types and morale. Nato style counters. Four maps (3 large and 1 small). Inkerman, whilst fought on the smallest map due to the small battlefield, is a standout. Games are always close and are extremely accurate and well designed and researched. A well designed simulation.

Midway Solitaire is a wargame of the Campaign in the Pacific Theater of Operations (PTO) in April-June 1942. This period saw the Japanese take the offensive in two major campaigns which resulted in the battles of the Coral Sea and Midway, both of which were decided by aircraft carrier actions. In the game, the player takes command of United States Navy and Allied (USN) forces. The game system takes command of Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) forces. You, as the USN commander, must defeat multiple IJN naval offensives while your foe has superior numbers. What is at stake is the entire course of the war in the Pacific Theater.

From the publisher's website:

In the far future, Earth is a distant myth. When mankind gained the means to transit the vastness of space safely and quickly, a great human wave extended across the galaxy, and humans soon inhabited thousands of worlds.

Communities of worlds formed alliances; alliances became federations, and eventually a galactic empire was born. That empire existed for millennia, growing and consolidating, bringing most of the inhabited worlds under its control.

Despite its size and apparent success, though, all is not well in the Galactic Empire. There are rebels, usurpers, those who want to create empires of their own, and aliens of every imaginable form. Over the long millennia, even the form of man is taking a new shape with genetic engineering.

Struggle for the Galactic Empire is a solitaire science fiction game. You assume leadership of the forces of the Galactic Empire as it strives to maintain and expand its dominion while fighting off the forces of chaos that seek to destroy it. You make all the military, political, social and economic decisions to deal with the threats that arise, keep the far-flung empire stable, and still expand and bring new glory through discovery, colonization and conquest.

The map shows the entire galaxy divided into sectors of star systems. Production is carried out by nano-assemblers to create starships and world-sized weapons. Units include combat and colonization ships, control groups and leaders. Units have two types of combat values: weapons and morphogenetic systems. Weapons destroy the enemy, while morphogenetic systems change them into friends. Loyalties switch back and forth depending on the situation.

Threats are generated by over 100 randomly drawn chaos markers. They include: rebels, usurpers, independent empires, invaders and alien forces, as well as technological, economic, social, political and military events. You can also launch expeditions to attempt to gain new knowledge and technology. Other rules allow you to use psycho-social warfare and propaganda to repress rebellions.

Ceres: Operation Stolen Base is a solitaire game depicting the actions of an elite Rebel task force attempting to seize the largest source of water in the Solar System shortly after the outbreak of the Free Mars Revolution. Your task force must defeat the Earth Federation ships in the area and seize the primary surface base.

The opposition forces are controlled by the game system using a deck of cards whereby a card is drawn after the player moves a task force, which may result in a new opposing force being placed where the task force just moved and forcing combat to occur. Some locations are more likely to have larger opposition forces to appear than others and although initial opposition forces will be relatively small, resistance will increase as their alert level increases.

Players begin the game with a number of assembly points with which they can use to custom-build their fleet, including adding special weapon pods to ships to provide benefits such as drone defenses and cyber warfare abilities to keep enemy alert levels lower. If your fleet includes an assembly ship, you can even repair and alter your fleet even after your attack on Ceres begins.

Four increasingly difficult missions must be completed to win the campaign game. Along the way, additional ships arrive and pods are constructed to increase strength and technological capabilities. A unique card system counts down the time remaining and provides challenges and opportunities at every orbit.

In this game the player takes command of a Rebel task force attempting to complete missions critical to securing the Ceres water base. Your success will ensure Mars and other colonies have a major source of water for survival and the Earth Federation will be forced to haul water up the deep and costly gravity well from Earth.

This game is set in the Free Mars universe and is a prequel to the Free Mars boxed game.

Phobos Rising! Insurgency on Mars is a solitaire game depicting the heroic actions of an elite team attempting to secure key facilities on Mars. Success means Mars has been secured and the Martian Revolution, depicted at the start of the Free Mars game, begins with a general uprising across the colonies bases and ships in the Solar System.

The player starts with a handful of team members and a few gear enhancements. Four increasingly difficult missions must be completed to win the campaign game. Moving across a map depicting the Martian geography from Olympus Mons to Valles Marineris, Earth Federation forces will attempt to stop the team from completing its missions. Your team will be able to recruit additional members, obtain specialized gear to enhance skills, and acquire shuttles to speed movement. A unique card system counts down the time remaining and provides both challenges and opportunities at every turn.

In this game the player takes command of a Rebel team attempting to complete missions critical to initiating the Free Mars Revolution. Your success will help ensure Mars is secure from Earth Federation forces and ready to support the Rebel fleet gathering overhead.

This game is set in the Free Mars universe and is a prequel to the Free Mars boxed game.

Napoleonic 20 Multi-Pack, Volume I

Fading Glory is the second game (No Retreat - The Russian Front Deluxe Edition is the first) we (GMT Games) are producing as part of our strategic friendship/partnership with Victory Point Games, and the first game we are producing from their popular Napoleonic 20 series. The idea for this and future volumes is that we will take multiple existing games from the VPG Napeoleonic 20 series, add an as-yet-unpublished game to the mix, and create a GMT boxed game with 3-4 games in the box, using larger (3/4") counters and GMT production.

The Napoleonic 20 game system from Victory Point Games features lower-level wargame complexity on maps where, generally, 20 pieces or fewer are in play at one time (total, for both sides). This creates tense, dramatic and fast-playing situations on the board where higher echelon troop formations (generally corps) vie for position and dominance. Subscribers to C3i have recently enjoyed Jena 20, a game in this series which features eight pages of Standard rules and one-to-two pages of exclusive rules per title.
Veteran game designer Joe Miranda, with developers Alan Emrich and Lance McMillan, have created and refined a highly popular game series that is growing all the time. (Based on Joe's series rules, Alan, Lance, and Steve Carey have each designed one of the games in this multi-pack - in addition to Joe's Waterloo game.) A hallmark feature is the use of narrative random event cards that help “tell the stories” unique to each battle and small campaign. This “friction of war” element, combined with the operational-level maneuvers, combat, and even lulls, provide players a fun exercise in the Napoleonic parry-and-thrust of grand battles as armies close to bayonet-point to see which will break first.

This edition includes the latest version (3.0) of the Standard series rules.
Morale plays an vital role, as both sides can ‘spend’ this resource to force march their units, help rally stragglers, or commit reserves to a key attack or defense. But look out… when a side’s morale is reduced to zero, it has lost the game!

Included in this Multi-Pack are:

Salamanca 20 (Wellington vs. Marmont, 1812)
Smolensk 20 (Napoleon vs. Barclay de Tolly in the near-battle to decide the Russian Campaign, 1812)
Borodino 20 (Napoleon vs. Kutusov before Moscow, 1812)
Waterloo 20 (Napoleon vs. Blucher and Wellington, 1815)

Game Components:

Four 17” x 22” mounted maps (2 boards, backprinted)
117 3/4" Counters (thick, with Rounded corners, like No Retreat)
48 Event cards (12 for each game)
One 8-page Standard Rules booklet

Empires in America (EIA) is a solitaire States of Siege™ Series game of the conflict in North America between the French and British in the mid-18th century. This war, known locally as The French and Indian War, became embroiled in Europe’s Seven Years’ War (1756-63), which caused that conflict to expand into a true World War (this was World War 0, for those keeping count). The French and Indian War saw small armies (with Indian allies joining them, particularly on the French side) march through vast wildernesses to fight battles which decided America’s fate. This war was a prelude to the American Revolution that broke out two decades later.

In EIA you control the French (and Indian) forces and the game system controls the British (and their Indian allies).
